Performance-Based Die Engineering Strategies

with Pete Ulintz,, Anchor Manufacturing Group, Inc.

Date: Monday, February 11, 2008
Location: PMA Headquarters, 6363 Oak Tree Blvd., Independence, OH 44131
Schedule: 8:30 a.m. – Breakfast; 9:00 a.m. – Program; 10:30 a.m. - Adjourn

Join the Cleveland District of PMA as we gather to discuss performance-based die engineering strategies with Pete Ulintz, Advanced Product Engineering Manager at Anchor Manufacturing Group, Inc.

This presentation will focus on the impending need to replace current die- design strategies with more advanced die engineering practices. Pete will discuss the fundamental differences between designing and engineering dies and the significant implications these changes will have on our apprenticeship programs.

Pete also will discuss weaknesses in what he calls function-based die- design standards. These types of die standards are currently used by nearly every stamping manufacturer and tool and die shop in our industry. Pete makes a compelling argument for the implementation of “Performance-Based Die Specifications” (PBDS), a concept he first proposed in a technical paper (pending publication) on designing and building dies for high-strength steel stampings.

Pete Ulintz has been in the metal stamping and tool and die industries since 1978. His background includes tool and die making, tool engineering, engineering management, advance process planning and product development. He has been speaking at PMA national seminars, roundtables and METALFORM symposiums since 1996, focusing on topics such as: transfer and automation systems, tool and die design, deep-draw technology, metalforming simulation and problem solving in the press shop.

Pete also writes a monthly column, "Tooling by Design," for MetalForming magazine.

Collecting Unbiased Production Data

Date: Tuesday, October 9, 2007
Location: PMA Headquarters, 6363 Oak Tree Blvd., Independence, OH 44131
Schedule: 8:30 a.m. – Breakfast; 9:00 a.m. – Program;

Join the Cleveland District of PMA as we gather to discuss how to collect unbiased production data from shop floors.

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) and manufacturing execution system (MES) software programs often rely on data that is generated from the production floor. In many cases, this production data must be manually entered. Unfortunately, manually entered data is not always timely, accurate or unbiased.

This presentation will describe software tools that automatically collect unbiased data from presses or any other production machines, place the data into an industry standard database and make it available to other software packages.

The presentation will also cover automatic report distribution (including OEE reports) and ways to view real-time factory status using a web browser.

Our speaker, Mr. Ashok Bhide, has been the marketing manager for Wintriss Controls Group of Honeywell since 1985. Ashok is a past PMA board member, current METALFORM exhibition chair and has presented at numerous industry events.

Economic Outlook for 2008

"How Will the Economy Vote in the Presidential Election?"

Location: PMA Headquarters, 6363 Oak Tree Blvd., Independence, OH 44131
Schedule: 8:30 a.m. – Breakfast; 9:00 a.m. – Program;

Will the presidential election play a role in determining the 2008 economic/business outlook OR will the economy play a role in electing the President? What does history suggest? And what factors—China and foreign economies, the value of the dollar, energy and raw material prices—are shaping the 2008 outlook for manufacturing? Ultimately, does the business expansion still retain staying power or is the economy poised for a fall? And what is the cause of all the recent volatility in the financial markets? These issues will be discussed in detail by one of America’s consistently top forecasters.

Dr. Ken Mayland is president of ClearView Economics, LLC, a firm specializing in economic research and forecasting. Ken was previously the chief economist of two major financial institutions (First Pennsylvania Bank and KeyCorp). Graduating with degrees in economics from MIT (undergraduate) and the University of Pennsylvania (M.A. and Ph.D), he has spent more than 30 years studying the business cycle and providing economic analyses to a variety of constituencies. As a member of the BusinessWeek Annual Economic Forecasting Survey Panel, Ken hit the 2002 GDP, unemployment rate and CPI inflation projections within a tenth of a percent. Ken also was named one of the best forecasters in USA Today’s forecasting panel for 2005.
